Originally from Australia, cockatiels when fully grown weigh between 80-100 grams. They can see colour, whistle to a tune, learn to speak short words and small phrases, and live for about 15-20 years (One famous bird lived to the age of 38). Cockatiels are very social birds and if kept without another bird, must be played with every day. If they do not get enough attention, they may become untamed. Cockatiels like to be patted on the crest, and should be washed about once every 48 days to maintain a healthy coat of feathers. Cockatiels have the ability to speak, whistle and occasionally learn tricks. Cockatiels like to go outside, but they may fly away even if their wings are clipped. The Australian Bird Company is a recommended seller of cockatiels. They have all the necessities for looking after your parrot, including cages, food, books and toys. The best way to have a tame cockatiel is to buy an 18 month old baby that has been hand raised a few weeks after being born.
